Chapter Fifteen

The days following the McDermotts’ farewell party were filled with contradictory emotions for Val. What had happened between her and Garth disturbed her. It should never have happened. It was her fault. She had given in to the impulse of the moment. The longing for companionship, comfort.

She had been aware of her growing attraction to Garth Hasten. As their friendship had developed, she saw in him all the things she admired in a man—intelligence, consideration, sensitivity along with a strength that was masculine without being macho. He didn’t seem to feel the need to prove anything. He was just himself. The more she had come to admire him, the more she was drawn to him.

Was it love? Perhaps, not yet. But she had to be honest. It could easily become love if she allowed it to happen. The trouble was that she wasn’t free to love Garth or anyone else. Legally, she was still married. And she had lied to Garth about that That troubled her most

He had been so open with her and she had kept the deepest, most important thing about herself a secret.

Before she could let anything more develop between her and Garth, her marriage to Kevin must be dissolved. The divorce papers were still unsigned. Val felt the most wrenching indecision at the thought. How would Garth react when she told him the truth? Because that’s what she had to do or…or what? Run away? Again? She was done with trying to escape from the past. She wanted a normal life for both Megan and herself.

After a third restless night, feeling groggy from lack of sleep, Val dragged herself out of bed. She went, through the motions of fixing breakfast and walking with Megan to meet the school bus. Then she walked back down the beach and headed toward the cove. Her head ached from the inner confusion, the indecision that racked her brain and bruised her heart. Over and over she asked herself questions that seemed to have no answers. No right answers anyway. Were there any right answers?

Should she do what Kevin had demanded? Sign the papers, get it over with once and for all? If she did, then she would be free. Free. That word had a strange, unpredictable ring. She hadn’t really been free since the first time she saw Kevin.

He’d been coming down the hall in high school, with his stocky, muscular body, a swagger in his walk, his head held in a defiant way. He’d stood in front of her and her friend, Ellen, on their way to class and boldly asked her, “Where do you hang out after school?”

Hang out? Even then, she could only imagine what her schoolteacher mother would say to that kind of talk! Why had she let Kevin take over her life? Was it the novelty of opposites attracting? Or rebellion against her sheltered environment, conservative parents? Had they been, as her mother had tried to point out to her, “unequally yoked” even from the beginning?

“It will never work,” her father had said.
